The Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) at the University of Ghana proudly offers a robust Ph.D. programme in Population Studies, designed for individuals eager to explore the dynamics of human populations at an advanced level. Available in both full-time and part-time formats, this doctoral programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human population behavior, growth patterns, demographic structure, spatial distribution, and the complex interrelations between population trends and other social phenomena.
Our curriculum equips students with essential knowledge and analytical tools, utilizing demographic methods and models that are fundamental in studying population behavior. Through didactic teaching, interactive seminars, and hands-on research, students gain the skills necessary to pursue impactful careers in academia, research, policy-making, governmental, and non-governmental organizations.

- Full-Time Study: 4 years (8 Semesters)
- Part-Time Study: 6 years (12 Semesters)
Entry Requirements
Candidates interested in the Ph.D. in Population Studies programme should possess:
- A solid undergraduate degree (minimum Second Class Lower).
- A strong academic record from a master’s programme in Population Studies or an equivalent qualification (e.g., MA/MSc/MPhil.) from an accredited university.
